Why spelling mistakes are costing you business…

Poor spelling and grammar mistakes lose business and cost millions of pounds each year, research suggests. And when starting a business in a competitive world you need to make sure that simple errors aren’t grounding you before you’ve begun.


A survey by Global Lingo found that 74% of users surveyed notice the quality of spelling and grammar on websites, and the majority said that this would damage their trust in the company to provide a decent service. In a guide to spotting scam emails published by Totaljobs, poor spelling and grammar is highlighted as a red flag - a key sign that an email or website isn’t genuine.


It’s hard to quantify in real terms precisely how much business or revenue that you lose due to misspelt web copy or badly worded emails, but online entrepreneur Charles Duncombe monitored traffic to his retail site and found that revenue doubled after an error was rectified. "If you project this across the whole of internet retail, then millions of pounds worth of business is probably being lost each week due to simple spelling mistakes" says Mr Duncombe. Odds are you will never truly be able to assess how much interest you are losing due to minor errors – so why not give yourself the best chance you can to get it right?
