What is a content writer and why should you hire one?

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

A content writer is a person who will write your marketing or business copy for you in whatever form you need, such as blog posts, advertorials, brochures or articles. Not to be confused with a copywriter in the advertising sense, (who focus more on short-form copy, such as straplines and adverts), a content writer is an asset to any business, whether they rely on websites and social media to promote themselves, or still use paper and print based formats.

Why should I hire a writer?

You could just write your own copy, right? Sure, you could, but here are five good reasons not to:

1. Writing is hard

There’s a saying along the lines of “if it’s easy to read, it was hard to write.” There is a skill to taking information and presenting it in a succinct way to get your point across. A professional writer spends years studying and polishing their skills to do this, so that you don’t have to.

2. Free up time to do what you do best

When you employ a writer, you free up a huge amount of your time and energy to focus on other aspects of your business. The space to get on with building and running your venture can be invaluable, particularly if you are just getting started.

3. A good writer can help you to clarify your ideas

Maybe you already have some ideas down on paper, or maybe you don’t know where to start. A good writer can take those ideas and turn them into engaging copy, identifying your target audience and speaking directly to them.

4. You can be too close to what you are trying to say

When you’ve re-read something twenty times you can become blind to certain gaps or inaccuracies. A writer can help give you a fresh perspective and can help you to pick up anything you may have missed.

5. Flawless, error free copy is essential for your credibility

You might be the best in the world at what you do – but if your website or promotional material has spelling or grammar errors, you damage your image and potentially lose business. Research suggests that spelling mistakes can cut online sales in half, and consumers are more likely to think that your website isn’t genuine.

Whether you need a one-off document or an ongoing commitment, scrypsi can help you to make your content the best that it can be.
